195. Oldsmobile Classic TV Commercial

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents - a classic car commercial - featuring the very catchy jingle - Come with me Lucille in my merry oldsmobile. This tv commercial is also a cartoon, animated by the greats at Fleischer Brothers studio, the same fellows who brought us Popeye, Betty Boop and Superman in the early days. The commercial is a long form presentation - probably initially released in theaters to play before the main feature. Parts of it are quite cheeky - especially for the day. There's a peeping tom character, and this line - you can go as far as you like with me, in my merry oldsmobile. Somehow i am not sure how one would measure mileage - ha!

Well, it seems the Black Parrot is on the loose, and he is knocking off Post Offices. And of course, he comes to the Caption's cozy PO, as he is watching Mrs. Perkins' kids. It seems like The Captain has a little thing for Mrs. Perkins, so he agrees to watch her kids. Well, when the evil villain comes, the kids end up saving the day by smacking the Black Parrot with some weights. In the end, The captain sends him via mail to the State Prison - now we thought this was a federal offense, so perhaps he should have gone to the Federal Prison - now who handled continuity for this cartoon?

The skating animation by by Willard Bowsky and Orestes Calpini is timeless. This is a remarkable piece of work.

Description: From 1940 - it's Popeye in - Eugene the Jeep. Popeye gets a new bundle of joy... but it's not a baby... or a puppy.. it is a new character named Jeep, who is some kind of magical alien creature, who wants to sleep in bed with Popeye. This is one of the rare Popeye Cartoons - where he doesn't eat spinach to give him the strength to cure what ails him. I have always been a fan of Eugene the Jeep - and this is one of the best Jeep toons.

Then - guess what? Why the boys get into trouble and need Popeye to save them, after a healthy dose of spinach of course. Nice animation - a good clean fun American Holiday celebration featuring the pride of the U.S. Navy, Popeye. Also of note - for some reason, the nephews have been reduced to 2 from 4. I have no idea why - and i am not sure which 2 nephews are featured, so i listed all four in the cast.

Description: Francois Truffaut's gangster film from 1960 - Shoot the Piano Player (or in French - Tirez Sur le Pianiste) is terrific! Starring Charles Aznavour as local pub pianist Charlie Kohler and Marie Dubois as his love interest, Lena. Years ago, Charlie used to be reknowned concert pianist Edouard Saroyan, till he had a falling out with his wife, who fell out a window. Edouard dropped out and became Charlie Kohler, pub pianist. The fact that Charlie's brothers are gangsters complicates life a bit, lots of great dialogue too. PLUS, Boby Lapointe is featured in a cool singing waiter cameo and does a live rendition of catchy tune called Framboise.

256. Sinbad The Sailor

Originally released for theaters, it's the story of a sick young girl named Nancy, who needs some sunshine to get well. So Raggedy Ann goes off on a kite ride to talk to the sun, who tells her to talk to Mr. Cloudy, who can not do a thing till Mr. Breezy moves him out of the way. Then, she must see Mr. Zero.... Yikes! Like many other Cartoons from the era, this one contains racial stereotyping that is often offensive to some viewers. Our apologies, we present it as a piece of history. That said, it is still a nice peice of animation - check it out.

Description: This cartoon was made in the mid forties - and was probably sponsored by the American Dental Association. Basically, this animation is REALLY weird - and features some real world scenes at a dentist's office with some kids.. who tells them the story of Winky the Watchman, who is in charge of making sure the pillars are taken care of. (The pillars are a set of teeth). Also has some unintended racial stereotyping foolishness - which just makes it even more creepy... as the Good 'uns are white folks... and the Bad 'uns are black... who seem to speak in the ridiculous Steppin Fetchit manner, often prevelent in entertainment made in this period. If you like Dental humor - make sure you search for Dentist, and find a bunch more gems. If you liked this one... you'll love Dr. Barre - the hockey team dentist.

The temperature is dropping and the Iceman Cometh and all the wise birds are migrating to warmer climates ? well all the birds except one hapless family that is waiting for an egg to hatch. I'm Alabamy Bound ? they'll be no Heebie Jeebies Hangin' Round. This cartoon is the first to offer a Blues tune as part of the soundtrack, though Leadbelly isn't singing it.
