Space Shuttle

T

he space shuttle takes off like a rocket, but when it
comes back to Earth, it lands like a glider. This means it can be used over and over again.

T
he shuttle is launched on the back
of a huge fueltank. Two extra side rockets help to blast it into space.
T

he shuttle is covered withspecial tiles that stop it burning up
as it speeds back to Earth. After blast-off, the two side rockets drop
back to Earth on huge parachutes.

Trains

Trains run on rails. They are made
of carriages pulled by engines. Passenger trains carry people, and freight
trains transport goods. The first trains were
powered by steam, but most modern trains run on electricity or a fuel called diesel.

The Mallard recorded the fastest ever speed for
steam trains. It reached a speed of 203 kilometers an hour.
The fastest passenger train in the world is the French TGV.
It travels at more than 300 kilometers an hour. TGV stands for "High Speed Train" in French.

Submarines

Submarines can travel beneath the sea for many weeks
without coming up to the surface. Many submarines are underwater
warships that carry m
issiles and other dangerous weapons. Others are used to
explore the depths of the sea.

The first submarine used in warfare could only carry one person.
He had to turn the propeller, steer the submarine to an
enemy ship and hook a bomb to its hull. This did not work, so the submarine was only
used once.

Time

The clocks and watches we use to tell the time are very accurate.
But long ago people could only count the days and nights to measure
the passing the time. Later, they invented simple
clocks using water or sand to tell the time.

An egg timer works like a sand clock. The sand runs
from one half of the timer to the other in exactly the time it
takes to boil an egg. To start the timer, you turn it upside down
to make the sand run into the empty half.

Sounds

There are sounds around us all the time – voices, music, and traffic.
Every sound you hear is made by something vibrating.
This means that it is moving backwards and forwards very quickly.

Sounds move through the air in waves. When someone
speaks to you, they make vibrations in the air. The sounds waves travel
through the air to you. Your ears pick up the vibrations and you hear sounds.

Sounds travel four times faster through water than they do through air.
They also travel much further. Seals can hear each other underwater
when they are huge distances apart.
